The Region

The Driftless Area is a region in the American Midwest noted mainly for its unique geography. While primarily in southwestern Wisconsin, it includes areas of southeastern Minnesota, northeastern Iowa and extreme northwestern Illinois.

The term “driftless” indicates a lack of glacial drift, the material left behind by retreating continental glaciers.  As the glaciers bypassed the region, they left intact a rugged landscape of rolling hills, bluffs, steep slopes, and deep river valleys that are dotted with quaint, historic towns.
